Lucky Dog Brings Premium Brands to the Ave

by Jennifer Astion

Lucky Dog on the Ave is a new premium thrift store owned by Seattle natives Jordan Stevens and Gus Hohlbein. The store stocks hundreds of pairs of high end pre-owned shoes and hard to find vintage tee shirts and outerwear. “We offer all premium brands and a curated selection. You’ll find Patagonia, North Face, and Pendleton. There is no junk to sort through,” explains Stevens.

The owners, who are also cousins, started their business on Ebay, then moved to Instagram and a storefront in Greenwood. Word spread quickly. Seattle rapper Macklemore shopped at the Greenwood store.

The entrepreneurs chose to open their second store in the U District because of the proximity to the UW campus. “Most of our customers in the U District are college students, some high school students,” said Stevens. Plus, Stevens is familiar with the Ave. “I used to work at Bartell’s.”

Their model is buy – sell – trade and they are highly selective. “You can find a jacket that would sell for $800 retail priced at $400 in our store,” said Stevens.

They also have their own Lucky Dog brand whose fans include former Sonic (and Husky) Nate Robinson.

A large portion of their sales still comes from Instagram where you can browse through their offerings at @luckydogontheave or @luckydogclothing. Their store at 4542 University Way is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
