May 18, 2023

Join UDP and Lid I-5 Seattle for an Inspiring Bike Tour

Embark on an engaging bike tour on Saturday, July 1 with Lid I-5 Seattle to envision the possibilities of a freeway lid that could reconnect the U District and Wallingford neighborhoods, offering affordable housing and open space. This event, co-sponsored by The U District Partnership (UDP), invites you to delve into the unifying history of these projects, witness how lids have enhanced neighborhood connections, and engage in insightful discussions on landscape and urban design.

The tour starts at the southwest corner of NE 50th Street and 7th Avenue NE, where you will pedal along the perimeter of the potential future lid site. As you traverse through the University District and the enchanting UW campus, you will proceed towards the under-construction Montlake Lid. The journey continues as you cross the SR-520 bridge and explore three new lids on the Eastside, expanding your understanding of the transformative power of these innovative projects.

Throughout the tour, you will gain valuable insights into the historical significance of these developments, witness the positive impact lids have had on neighborhood connections, and engage in thought-provoking discussions on landscape and urban design.

Note that this tour is designed for experienced bicyclists and is not suitable for beginners. Participants are required to bring their own bikes. The route spans approximately 7 miles one-way and includes sustained uphill climbs and riding in mixed traffic. At the conclusion of the tour, participants have the option to bike back to Seattle independently or load their bikes onto a bus at the Yarrow Point freeway station (separate bus fare required).
