New Affordable Housing Project, Public Restroom Announced for the U District

April 26, 2024

This week, Sound Transit made a major announcement for the U District: the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) has been awarded the development rights to build mixed-income affordable housing on the current site of Rosie’s Tiny Home Village at the corner of NE 45th Street and Roosevelt Way NE. The development will include 160 units of affordable housing and, notably, a public restroom along with an Urban Rest Stop.

The U District Partnership was instrumental in helping Sound Transit position the site for redevelopment, advocating to re-route the alley to 11th to ensure the site was viable–along with the inclusion of a public restroom as a public benefit for the community. UDP looks forward to continued engagement with Sound Transit, LIHI and the project team as the building moves through the multi-year design and construction process.

“This is an exciting development for the U District,” Don Blakeney, executive director of The U District Partnership, said in a statement Monday.

“For years the community has identified affordable housing and public restrooms as top priorities for the neighborhood. This project will deliver both, in addition to an Urban Rest Stop, which will meet many of the needs of our unhoused population in Northeast Seattle,” added Blakeney
