The U District Clean & Safe Committee is a semi-monthly meeting open to all U District stakeholders who are interested in discussing learning about cleaning- and safety-related issues in the neighborhood. The committee meetings provide a venue for U District stakeholders to raise new issues, inform UDP staff about priorities, and to help shape clean and safe strategies for the neighborhood. This committee is co-chaired by Don Schulze–the President of U District Property Associates–and Aaron Hoard, the Interim Director of the Office of Regional & Community Relations, University of Washington. The U District Marketing Roundtable meets semi-monthly and is a network of business owners and marketing/communications professionals who meet to collaborate and contribute to sharing the positive attributes of the U District neighborhood to the broader region. The U District Urban Vitality Committee meets monthly to advise UDP staff on planning, public space and policy issues. This committee serves as the nexus between the U District community and the developers, public officials, and organizations managing and implementing the transformational urban development taking place throughout the district. This committee is co-chaired by Stephen Antupit–a U District resident and leader of the Urban Design Studio at the City of Tacoma–and Phil Duff, the Director of Healthcare Design for SABArchitects. The U District Economic Development Committee meets quarterly to explore the economic forces at play in the U District, Seattle’s fastest-growing neighborhood. The committee also serves in an advisory capacity, and as a resource for UDP by providing input and guidance on work plans and initiatives. The U District’s NE 42nd Street has been designated a “Green Street” and there is now grant funding to re-envision how this street can better serve the neighborhood and the growing residential, student and small business population along the corridor. In partnership with U District Advocates, UDP is working with community members and the City to convene stakeholders to guide the future of this critical gateway to the University of Washington Campus. The U District Arts & Culture Initiative launched in 2022 and serves as a working advisory group to advance, promote and sustain arts and culture in the U District. The group is composed of leaders from U District arts and cultural organizations, including departments and institutions affiliated with the University of Washington. Today, the group is actively working with UDP Staff and a hired consultant to develop an arts and culture agenda for the U District neighborhood. The UDP Board meets ten times per year and the UDBIA Ratepayer Advisory Board meets quarterly. The public is welcome to attend these meetings and there is an opportunity for public comment at the start of every meeting.
